On that date, Edwin Drake successfully drilled an oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania, at a depth of 69.5 feet (21.2 meters). This event is widely considered to be the birth of the modern petroleum industry, as it was the first time a well was specifically drilled to extract oil for commercial use.

- Sir Thomas More was executed on July 6, 1535. He was a prominent English lawyer, statesman, and philosopher who served as Lord High Chancellor of England under King Henry VIII. He was a devout Catholic and a man of great integrity, which ultimately led to his downfall. He was executed for refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy, which would have acknowledged King Henry VIII as the head of the Church of England, and for refusing to accept the king's annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. More's refusal was considered an act of treason, and he was beheaded on Tower Hill in London. He was later canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church.

- King Richard III died at the Battle of Bosworth Field. He was the last English monarch to die in battle. The battle was the culmination of the Wars of the Roses and pitted Richard's army against the forces of Henry Tudor, who would go on to become King Henry VII "A horse, a horse! My kingdom for a horse!" King Richard III, William Shakespeare's Act V, Scene 4. This line appears in Act V, Scene 4, during the Battle of Bosworth Field. Richard has lost his horse and is fighting on foot, a disastrous situation for a medieval king in battle.

The invasion culminated with the pivotal Battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066, where William's forces defeated the English army led by King Harold Godwinson, who was killed in the battle.
